A Brief History Lesson of the Chevrolet Corvette

0

The Chevrolet Corvette, better known as the Chevy Corvette has a long history. Starting in 1953, built by General Motors, it had a selling price of $3,498 and only 300 models were produced. It was white, with a red interior and black top and ‘clip on’ side curtains instead of regular windows.

The original car was not popular and was called the ‘plastic bathtub’. Credit for the original design is given to Harley Earl, with Myron Scott credited with the name. Discouraged, the company almost discontinued the model but continued production and it became very popular in the sixties.

Although the car was originally produced in Michigan and Missouri, Kentucky now claims the honor. It is so proud of this honor that it is now called the state’s ‘official sports car’. In addition, the state holds an annual celebration and homecoming in its honor. In 2003 it was celebrated as the only American car to survive 50 years of existence.

In 1954, with a selling price of $2,774, 3,640 were produced with the number dropping to 700 produced in 1955. Changes in construction, the cost, and colors changed over the years. This production is now classified as ‘first generation’ (1953-1962), ‘second generation’ (1963-1967), ‘third generation’ (1968-1982), ‘fifth generation’ (1997-2004 and ‘sixth generation’ (2005-2010). Each year saw various changes until the Grand Sport Coupe and Convertible that is on the market today. In 2010, this car sold for $48,930.

Models C5-R and C6-R are used by race-track drivers and have produced winners a number of times. In addition, they have been used as the pace car at the Indianapolis 500. These cars are specially built with enlarged engines, a wider wheel base, strong body construction and other things to accommodate this kind of use.

The most coveted model today is the lightweight C2, which was built in 1962. At that time, it was planned to produce 100 cars but only five were built. Some very famous drivers such as A. J. Foyt, Jim Hall and others, drove them. These cars, 001-005 are the most valuable Corvettes ever produced and are held by private parties.

‘Pop Culture’ played a large part in the popularity of this car. It appeared in many movies, television shows, magazines and places that exposed it to the public. This made them more aware of its unusual beauty and style as well as its outstanding appearance, especially when driven by a handsome movie star or beautiful actress. Many people in the hi-tech arena drive the Chevy Corvette today. It still presents a classy appearance and is still manufactured in the two door, two seated model. This is very popular with those in the hi-tech set, presenting a striking appearance and sophistication.
